To register or title your kayak with your state or province — usually required when you add an electric motor — you need a Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (MSO), sometimes called a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO). Kayak Distribution issues this document for all Magellan Outdoors kayaks.

ℹ Do I need to register without a motor?
Requirements vary by state/province. Many jurisdictions only require registration for motorized vessels. Check with your local boating authority before requesting an MSO if you're paddling-only.

What You'll Need to Provide

  1. Your HIN — the 12-character Hull Identification Number on the rear right (starboard) side of the hull.
  2. Proof of purchase — your Academy receipt or order number showing date of sale.
  3. The name and address to appear on the MSO — must match the person registering the vessel.

How to Request Your MSO

  1. View and download the Kayak MSO template on this page.  Fill out the necessary information for your kayak and then print it off.

Frequently Asked

I lost my receipt — can you still issue an MSO?

We need to establish the date of sale to verify warranty eligibility. Contact us via the form and we'll advise what alternative proof we can accept (e.g. bank statement, gift receipt).

Do I also need a bill of sale?

Most states accept your Academy receipt as a bill of sale. The MSO and receipt together are usually sufficient for registration. Check with your state's boating authority to confirm.

The PD 10′6 has a motor mount — does that change anything?

If you're adding an electric trolling motor, you will almost certainly need to register the vessel. Request the MSO before installing the motor — some states require the vessel to be unregistered at the time of application.

Warranty Registration — Required Within 30 Days

Separate from state registration, you must register your kayak with Kayak Distribution within 30 days of purchase to activate your 5-year hull / 1-year parts warranty.
