The Impulse Drive is the pedal-powered propeller system on your Magellan Outdoors Pro Angler PD 10′6. This article covers installation, how to deploy and retract the drive on the water, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

In the Box

ItemPart #Qty
Impulse Drive unit (assembled)SM1121
Left crank arm (marked “L”)1
Right crank arm (marked “R”)1
LEFT crank screw (reverse-threaded, silver)1
RIGHT crank screw (standard thread, black)1
Splash guard / splash plateZ03071
Foam drive-well plug1
M4 Allen wrench (splash guard screws)1
M8 Allen wrench (crank screws)1

⚠️ CRITICAL — LEFT CRANK SCREW IS REVERSE-THREADED

The LEFT crank screw tightens COUNTERCLOCKWISE. The RIGHT crank screw tightens clockwise (normal direction).

Forcing the LEFT screw clockwise strips the spindle thread — the most common installation error for this drive. The silver-coloured screw is always the LEFT (reverse-thread) screw.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Set the kayak on a flat surface, cockpit facing up, stern toward you.
  2. Install the RIGHT crank arm first. Fit the arm marked “R” onto the right spindle. Insert the black (standard) screw and tighten clockwise with the M8 Allen wrench until snug. Do not overtighten.
  3. Install the LEFT crank arm. Fit the arm marked “L” onto the left spindle. Insert the silver (reverse-thread) screw and tighten COUNTERCLOCKWISE with the M8 Allen wrench until snug.
  4. Attach the splash guard. Fit the splash plate around the drive well opening. Secure with the provided M4 screws using the M4 Allen wrench. Tighten evenly.
  5. Lower the drive into the well, propeller-end down, until the top of the unit sits flush with the deck.
  6. Lock the drive. Lift the red lock pin, rotate the locking block 90° to the locked position, and release. The pin should click into the detent. Give the drive a firm upward pull to confirm it is locked.
  7. Install the foam plug into the drive well whenever the drive is not in use (transport and storage only).

Deploying and Retracting on the Water

Deploy: Push the drive straight down into the well until it locks (you will hear and feel a click). Confirm by pulling up.

Retract: Lift the red lock pin and pull the drive upward out of the well. It should slide out with moderate resistance.

ℹ️ Minimum water depth: 22″ / 55 cm — required to deploy the drive without the propeller striking the bottom.

Pedalling Tips

  • Keep a smooth, circular pedal stroke rather than pushing and releasing. Choppy strokes reduce efficiency and can cause vibration.
  • The drive can propel the kayak in forward or reverse. Forward pedalling moves the kayak forward; reverse pedalling moves it backward.
  • Avoid pedalling over submerged vegetation, ropes, or very shallow areas — propeller contact can damage the drive.

Care & Maintenance

After each use:

  • Rinse the drive with fresh water (hose or bucket), including the spindle area and crank arms.
  • Rinse the drive well on the kayak.
  • Dry before storage. Do not store the drive in the well long-term — use the foam plug.

Periodically:

  • Check that the crank screws are snug. Re-torque if needed (LEFT = counterclockwise; RIGHT = clockwise).
  • Inspect the propeller for nicks, cracks, or fishing line. A damaged prop reduces efficiency and can cause vibration.
  • Lubricate the lock pin and locking block with a marine-grade silicone spray once per season.
