How to install the rudder on a Riot Kayaks Polarity 16.5 tandem kayak
The installation of the rudder on a Riot Polarity 16.5 tandem kayak is pretty straight forward following these steps and by watching the video below.
Tools:
Star head screwdriver (or star head bit for your drill)
Small pliers or wrench for tightening the bolt nuts
Steps:
Open up the rear hatch and unpackage the rudder assembly
Unscrew and remove the pin bolt from the rudder assembly and set aside
Find the silver c-bracket, being careful to keep track of the 2 hardware screws packaged with it
Install the c-bracket by lining up the pre drilled holes in stern of kayak installing and tightening the 2 screws to hold it firmly in place
Line up the rudder assembly kit so the top of the c-bracket remains on top. Pay attention to the rope lines: they should be straight and not twisted or crosses
Insert the rudder pin bolt set aside earlier from the top of the c-bracket through all the holes of the rudder assembly and out the bottom hole of the c-bracket and install the nut and tighten by hand.
Pull out the two metal control cables and attach the loops to the underside of each rudder wing bolt. To to this under the nut then slide the cable eyelet on the bolt and tighten the nut by hand.
Use a small wrench or set of pliers along with your star head screwdriver to to tighten all the nuts. Be careful not to overtighten to allow movement in all the parts.
Finally test the rudder uphaul and downhaul ropes to lower and raise the rudder (you may have to sit in the kayak with your feet on the pedals for this to work most efficiently)
